Don’t hit the panic button!
Let’s be honest: mishaps are going to happen, and nothing is going to go exactly as planned. But that’s what will make your wedding day unique and delightfully memorable, especially when we arm you with these easy fixes for all your possible wedding-day dilemmas. And, when you expect the unexpected, nothing will bring you down on your big day.
An unexpected guest shows up
You counted RSVPs, and recounted, and counted heads one last time. Despite all that work, there’s always the possibility of a non-RSVPer showing up unannounced. Make sure you’ve left a few free chairs at various tables at the reception. It will make planning your seating chart easier (with a bit more wiggle room), and it allows for extras to be squeezed in at the last minute.
An inebriated guest
You want guests to have a great time, but the open bar may encourage a little too much merriment with Uncle Jack. If someone at your wedding goes a tad overboard on the alcohol, then you can always ask one or two people from your wedding party to help intervene and get the person into a cab and safely home. That way, the awkward pressure of you escorting a guest out is alleviated.
Little ones are a no-go
Just as the music starts and your ring bearer and flower girl are supposed to make their grand entrance, one of them freezes up (or both of them). Kids are unpredictable, and everyone knows this, so when they throw you a curveball, just try and roll with it. Guests will be sympathetic to your plight, and ultimately, it’s the candid tantrums or outbursts or unexpected flubs by the littles ones that really stand out at the end of the day.
The vendor brings the wrong thing
What do you do if the florist shows up and has the wrong kind of flowers? Or the pattern of dishes you chose is wrong? While it can be tricky in the moment to make major changes, having a wedding planner or an
on-site coordinator from your wedding venue will make streamlining these little blips a whole lot easier. To avoid the stress of this situation, make sure you call and confirm specifics with all your vendors the week before the wedding. It might diffuse an emergency before it even starts.
Too many nerves
We know all too well how stressful and exciting a wedding can be for a couple – it’s a whole whirlwind of emotions. To keep your butterflies at bay, there’s are a few steadfast rules for brides and grooms: avoid caffeine,
try to get enough sleep the night before and make sure you eat something. When someone asks if you need them to do anything for you, accept help and delegate. Your wedding day is all about you, being in the moment and truly enjoying the experience of it all. Don’t let it be clouded by jitters. (A glass of Champagne may help too – but just one!)
Fashion fumbles
You go to put your dress on and notice a small tear, or maybe a button falls off one of the groomsmen’s shirts. Prepare for minor beauty emergencies by packing a small sewing kit in your wedding day arsenal. Make sure you have a needle and thread, safety pins, bobby pins, de-wrinkling spray, tape, and more… just in case. (Check out more fashion fixes here.)
Weather doesn’t go your way
Please remember this. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, be sure to have a back-up plan. Doesn’t matter if your trusted local weatherman is calling for clear skies, if the Farmer’s Almanac is promising no bad weather or if you’ve done rain dances in your underwear: weather is unpredictable at its best. A ceremony is beautiful on a beach or hillside, but have a covered alternative solution too, like a clubhouse, barn, restaurant or tent
You’re late
You may set yourself up on a schedule (hair, makeup, getting dressed, photos, arriving at the ceremony, etc.), but there are a lot of factors that come into play on the wedding. A few extra minutes here or there can add up to a big chunk of time at the end of it all. So, make sure you give yourself a bit of a cushion around each “timeslot” – that way, you have some spare time in case you start running late.
